USA TODAY Elections 2024, real-time results under national load.
A real-time election results platform built for USA TODAY / Gannett: state-by-state interactive maps, live vote feed processing, tooltip-driven data visualization, and a structured voter guide engineered to stay accurate and fast under the peak national traffic of election night 2024.
Project overview
USA TODAY election coverage was delivered through fragmented tools with no unified interactive layer. State-level results lived in static tables, voter guide content was scattered across disconnected pages, and the 2024 cycle brought a national audience expecting real-time data visualization at scale. The engagement with RTW was about building a platform that could handle election night under load and actually show people what was happening.
RTW built an interactive election results frontend in Next.js and React, wired to real-time election data APIs. A custom JavaScript mapping layer powers the state-by-state interactive map: hover any state for live tooltip data, click through for state-level race breakdowns. The results engine processes incoming vote feeds and pushes updates to the UI in real time, no page reloads.
This is a portfolio entry rather than a case study. The platform launched November 5, 2024, engineered to stay responsive and accurate under peak national traffic. The architecture decisions: real-time data feeds, custom JS mapping layer, and state-level routing were RTW work. The 2024 election archive remains live as a reference implementation.

We build platforms that stay fast when it matters most.
Election night is the hardest possible test: real-time data, national traffic, zero tolerance for errors. Interactive maps, live feeds, structured civic content, engineered to perform under pressure.
