Extensible Markup Language. XML files are used to store and share data in a format that many different computer programs and websites can read. For example, spreadsheet applications, word processors, browsers, and many other applications can all import and reformat WordPress XML files. Bloggers migrating to WordPress can upload XML files containing their posts from a different site using the WordPress Importer, or another WordPress plugin.
