WordPress Encyclopedia: Everything you need to know for your WordPress Website. Search Engine Results Page or SERP is the displayed page of results that follow a search inquiry on a search engine. These pages are tailored to the keywords, relevance content, and authoritative presence according to what the user searched for. The main ideation of the Search Engine Results Page is to list the most relevant websites based on the searched term in order to provide the user with the best possible value.
SERPs generate two types of results within each search query. There is usually a place at the top and bottom of the Search Engine Results Page to display sponsored links or advertisements and organic results are sandwiched in the middle. The results are based on the search engine’s algorithm and will retrieve results that offer the best content for the searched keyword.
Each result on the Search Engine Results Page will generally include a title, a link to the indicated content, and a short description of information found on that result’s page:
In some cases, additional features are present, similar to the example above. This provides additional links and pages contained within the retrieved result. Other forms include web excerpts that are typically used by search engines to provide the most relevant and accepted definition of a term:
Another amazing feature of some SERPs is that extra insight it provides by trying to provide additional search suggestions others have searched in order to aid in finding the best results for the user.
While studies show that more than 75% of users will never click past the first SERP, the subsequent pages will start to become less relevant the further back in results they appear. SEO practices play a large role in SERP placement and several SEO experts frequent SERPs when performing research for client competitors.
Regardless of the platform you choose, whether you go with a WordPress website or another provider, there are options that are a part of the framework to aid in optimizing your SERP with the necessary SEO components.
To wrap things back around to SERPs, there are four sections that are most commonly used, among all search engines:
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Search Box where keyword queries are input
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Search Query(Keywords) inside of a Search box (text field)
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Organic SERP entries (keyword ordered in relevance)
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Advertisement SERP entries (keyword specific)
Other features are implemented under most SERPs now and are included in nearly 97% of all queries. These are similar to the ones stated above with special snippets and ‘People also ask’ features. There are others and many utilize the visual dynamics of the top position these special features are placed, in order to achieve higher click-thru rates. SERP positioning depends on a number of organic aspects, many of which will pertain to user-enriched content that provides value to the user and is not just crammed with keywords. The amount of organic content on your site and its usefulness to the user, pertaining to the indicated keyword, will dictate the overall positioning of the page. This practice is commonly referred to as SEO, the technique of optimizing a web page for a certain keyword to achieve higher SERP rankings.
